Throughout my years of living with my wife, Sharon's debilitating depression, I learned many things.
One lesson most difficult I had to learn was to say when my attempts to help do things were actually worse.
Very often, when there is a depression in the house, which imposes its will depression and family illness, and the rest of the family walking on eggshells all time for him to not let the depressed person. Such was the case in our house.

All my efforts and focus to try to make her happy just to make things worse.
This phenomenon is called "empowerment". Sharon by providing an environment that should not be responsible for anything in his life, everything she did was to provide its disease with an ideal environment to grow.
Once my eyes were opened a little, I started to make things a little differently. I started to allow Sharon to take responsibility for their own actions and face the consequences of their decisions, while protecting me as much as possible the consequences.
I started to refuse to make excuses for her, she had to do it yourself. I started to let me do things I liked to do in life, and if she refused, I have the right object, but will not let you manipulate me. If she does not a small thing, I went back instead of taking possession of me. Of course, all this in the most caring and support for the positions.
